About the trip

This 11-day journey connects some of South America’s most distinctive regions, combining northern Argentina, Chile’s Atacama Desert, and Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats. The route begins in Salta, where Andean traditions and small towns introduce you to the culture of the region, before continuing through dramatic landscapes shaped by altitude and time.

You will travel toward San Pedro de Atacama, a desert oasis set at the edge of one of the driest places on Earth, and then venture further into Bolivia to explore the vast Uyuni Salt Flats. Along the way, the scenery shifts between mountains, valleys, and open plains, creating a journey defined by contrast and scale.

Designed for travelers seeking unique environments and a sense of exploration, this itinerary brings together remote landscapes and cultural encounters in a seamless route across three countries.

Upon your arrival at Salta Airport, we will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon will be free to explore the city at your own pace.

Salta is known as «La Linda» (The Beautiful) for its charming colonial architecture and surrounding natural beauty. The city is a relaxing hub, with locals enjoying the traditional siesta from 1 pm to 5 pm, so keep in mind that shops and businesses may be closed during these hours.

As the gateway to northern Argentina, Salta offers easy access to some of the region’s most impressive natural wonders, including the Humahuaca Gorge and the colorful Hill of Seven Colors in the neighboring province of Jujuy. These stunning landscapes are just the beginning of your adventure across Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia.

Exploring Jujuy

A Journey Through History and Nature
Today, we will pick you up early in the morning to begin a full-day, 13-hour adventure exploring the Humahuaca Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking natural landscapes and cultural richness.

The gorge is home to stunning landmarks such as the Seven Color Hill, the Pucará de Tilcara (an ancient, well-preserved fortress), and the vibrant Paleta del Pintor (Painter’s Palette) at Maimará, where multi-colored mountain ranges paint the landscape.

Into the Northern Jungle
Continuing your journey, we will drive through the Yungas, a lush jungle area in northern Argentina, offering a contrast of green-tinted forests and steep mountains. The road winds through the breathtaking scenery, leading to the picturesque town of Humahuaca.

Take time to wander through colonial streets, admire the traditional architecture, and savor the serene atmosphere. Lunch (not included) can be enjoyed at one of the local taverns—be sure to try the humita, a regional corn-based dish.

Historical Landmarks
In the afternoon, we will visit the charming Uquía Church, where you can observe colonial paintings known as Pinturas Cuzqueñas. On our way, we’ll also pass the Tropic of Capricorn milestone, a significant geographical marker.

Finally, we will continue to San Salvador de Jujuy, the second major city in northern Argentina. Here, you can visit the cathedral, main square, and the presidential house, all part of the city’s rich historical and architectural heritage. Known as the «Tacita de Plata» (Silver Cup), Jujuy is often compared to the wealthy city of Cadiz in Spain.

At the end of the day, we will return to your hotel in Salta.

Salta’s Wine Region

Discovering the Heart of Northern Argentina’s Wine Country
Today, you will embark on a journey through the picturesque Lerma Valley, passing through small villages such as Cerrillos, La Merced, and El Carril before reaching the isolated town of Alemania. From there, travel 50 miles to Las Conchas Gorge, the entrance to the stunning Calchaquí Valley.

This unique landscape, shaped by thousands of years of erosion, features remarkable rock formations, including the Devil’s Throat and the Amphitheater, where local concerts are often held. The natural beauty of the valley offers plenty of photo opportunities as you explore its striking features.

Cafayate – Wine Capital of Northern Argentina
As you approach Cafayate, the vineyards begin to appear, and you will soon enter this charming colonial town, known as the capital of northern Argentina’s wine region. Cafayate is famous for its Torrontés wine, one of the most iconic varieties of the region.

After a relaxing lunch in Cafayate, take the opportunity to sip local wines and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this beautiful town.

At the end of the day, you will return to Salta, enriched by the sights, flavors, and culture of this famous wine-producing region.

Into the Desert

Journey to San Pedro de Atacama
Today, you will begin your next adventure by heading to the bus station for a scenic journey to San Pedro de Atacama. This 12-hour trip will take you across the Andes through the «Paso de Jama,» one of the highest international passes in the world, offering breathtaking views of the Altiplano.

As you make your way through the Andes, you will cross the border from Argentina into Chile. Don’t forget to keep your passport handy for border control. The route will take you 200 km (125 miles) through dramatic landscapes until you finally arrive in San Pedro de Atacama, the gateway to the driest desert in the world.

Arrival in San Pedro de Atacama
Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel in San Pedro. The rest of the day will be free to relax or begin exploring this small, charming town. Known for its adobe houses and laid-back atmosphere, San Pedro offers a taste of local culture.

Take a stroll down Caracoles Street, where you can sample the local dish, pastel de choclo (corn cake), or browse the artisan markets for handcrafted souvenirs. Embrace the unique vibe of this desert oasis and mingle with the friendly locals.

Discovering Atacama’s Desert Wonders

Exploring Valle de la Luna
¡Buen día Atacama! After your long journey, you’ll have the morning to relax and settle in. In the afternoon, we’ll head out for a 4-hour exploration of the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), a surreal landscape that feels otherworldly.

As we drive into the desert, you’ll begin to notice the strange salt and clay formations that define this unique terrain. Our first stop will be the «Three Marias» area, where the iconic statues of three rock formations stand as the female guardians of the valley. Take a moment to make a wish before continuing on to the next part of your adventure.

Salt Caves and Sunset Views
Next, we’ll visit the Salt Caves, where centuries-old salt formations have been shaped by the harsh desert conditions. The winding paths through the caves offer an up-close look at the intricate salt gemstones that form in this extreme environment.

As the day draws to a close, we’ll head to a viewpoint to witness the breathtaking sunset over the valley. The changing colors of the landscape, with the Licancabur Volcano turning pink and the valley bathed in golden light, create a scene that’s sure to stay with you long after your journey.

Afterward, we’ll drop you off in downtown Atacama, where you can wander through the charming streets and return to your hotel at your leisure.

A Desert Adventure

Early Morning at the Geysers
Today, you will embark on an early adventure to the Tatio Geysers, one of the highest geothermal fields in the world. At around 4 a.m., we’ll pick you up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama for the 100 km (60 miles) journey into the Andes. The 8-hour trip will take you to an extraordinary geothermal field where you’ll witness 40 geysers and 70 hot springs steaming in the cold morning air.

The early morning temperatures create a unique atmosphere, as the hot water contrasts with the chilly surroundings. It’s the perfect time for photos and to take in the magnitude of this natural phenomenon. You’ll also have the chance to relax in the Tatio Springs, rich in minerals, before enjoying a hearty breakfast with this incredible backdrop.

Visit to Machuca Village
After exploring the geysers, we’ll continue to the quaint village of Machuca, located at 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level. This small Atacameño town has just 20 adobe houses and a traditional church, where locals gather to ask for water and protection for the roads.

Though the community once thrived as llama shepherds, today they welcome visitors who come to admire their handcrafts and experience life in the high Andes. Take the opportunity to interact with the locals, learn about their traditions, and enjoy a taste of traditional sopaipillas, a fried corn-based treat.

After your visit to Machuca, you’ll be dropped off in downtown Atacama, where you can wander the streets or return to your hotel at your leisure.

Prepare for a truly unique adventure across Bolivia’s otherworldly landscapes on this 4-day journey to the Uyuni Salt Flats. The trip begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel for a 10-hour ride across stunning and dramatic terrain, crossing the border from Chile into Bolivia. At 14,435 feet above sea level, you’ll switch to a 4WD jeep, embarking on a remote exploration with a small group of fellow travelers.

Exploring the Eduardo Avaroa National Park
Your adventure begins in Eduardo Avaroa National Park, where you will experience the expansive high plains of Bolivia. Visit Laguna Verde and Laguna Blanca (Green and White Lagoons), both set against the towering Licancabur Volcano. As you continue, you will reach the surreal Dali Desert, a vast area with strikingly unique rock formations that seem straight out of a Salvador Dalí painting.

Next, the journey takes you to the thermal pools, also known as «foreigners soup» by the locals, where the waters are rich in minerals and offer a natural retreat. Then, visit the Sol de Mañana geysers, where steam erupts intermittently from the ground at an astonishing 194°F.

Flamingos and High Altitudes
After a break for lunch, the adventure continues to Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon), famous for its striking red hues due to the algae beneath the water. The lagoon is a critical nesting site for more than 30,000 flamingos and is surrounded by grazing land for alpacas. The area, located at 14,764 feet above sea level, offers the chance to spot endemic flora and fauna unique to the high-altitude environment.

End of the Day at Villa Mar
As the day winds down, you will head to Villa Mar Hostel in the Mallku Community, where you will enjoy a cozy dinner and rest for the night, preparing for another day of exploration.

The Valley of Rocks & Agua Dulce Waterfall

Welcome to day two of your Bolivia adventure! Today, you will start early with a visit to the Valley of Rocks, where you’ll encounter unique geological formations with fascinating names like the «Lost City of Italy,» the «World Cup,» and the «Camel.» These extraordinary rock shapes create a surreal landscape unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Next, you will stop at the Black Lagoon, a peaceful spot perfect for observing local wildlife. Then, you’ll continue to the Catal Lagoon and Canyon, which offer more dramatic scenery and chances to spot wildlife in its natural habitat.

Into the Highlands
After a lunch break, we will head to the Agua Dulce Waterfall viewpoint, a breathtaking spot where you can enjoy the view of cascading waters set against the vast highland backdrop. The surrounding valley is home to numerous local communities that raise Andean animals like llamas and alpacas.

The journey concludes with your arrival at Villa Candelaria, where you will enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the night at the Salt Hotel. This unique accommodation is built using salt blocks, with salt tables, chairs, and even couches, giving you a one-of-a-kind experience in the heart of the salt flats. Enjoy a warm shower and a restful night surrounded by the minerals of this incredible environment.

Exploring the Uyuni Salt Flats

Today is dedicated to one of the most iconic highlights of your journey: the Uyuni Salt Flats. We’ll start early in the morning with a 6-hour tour across the vast, gleaming salt flats, the largest in the world (6,575 square miles) and sitting at an altitude of 11,975 feet above sea level.

The endless white expanse of salt is both mesmerizing and surreal, especially during the rainy season (November-March) when the flats become a giant mirror, reflecting the sky and creating an almost dreamlike effect. Even in the dry season, the salt glistens brilliantly, offering an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Isla Incahuasi and Iconic Photos
Your journey continues to Isla Incahuasi, a small island in the heart of the salt flats, perfect for capturing panoramic views and a spectacular sunrise. You’ll have the chance to take the famous perspective photos that are so iconic in Uyuni, creating fun and creative moments to remember.

Playa Blanca Salt Hotel and Colchani
The adventure continues towards Playa Blanca Salt Hotel, where you will visit the Eyes of the Salt Flats—two perfectly round pools that form part of the salt extraction process. Afterward, we’ll head to Colchani, a small town located at the edge of the salt flats. Here, you can learn about the salt harvesting methods and buy local handicrafts.

Train Graveyard and Return to Villa Mar
The day ends with a visit to the Train Graveyard, a hauntingly beautiful site filled with abandoned trains left to rust in the open air. It’s an incredible place for photography, offering an eerie contrast to the vast, open landscape.

Afterward, you’ll return to Uyuni and then travel back to Villa Mar Hostel for the night, where you can relax after another day of exploring the stunning and unique landscapes of Bolivia.

Return to Chile
